Grass Volleyball

The Spring 2021 schedule is:

Tuesday           10U – Beginners (more skills and drills, some games)

Wednesday     *12U – Novice (played some…Skills and games)

Thursday         14U, 18U (some drills… Mostly games)

Friday              Free Play and Make-up day (if we have a rainout)

WHERE: The league will be in the grass to the left of KINGS GRANT ES (not Kingston), between KGES and St Nicholas Catholic Church parking lot.  Please park in the lot by the school. Players will enter the courts by the school fence.

WHEN: Courts will begin setup at 5pm. Players should arrive at 5:30pm. We will officially end at 7:00pm, however if kids and parents want to continue playing later, the court supervisor should allow

WHAT TO EXPECT:  The evening will start with a few drills, especially for younger kids. Volunteer coaches/parents will be on-hand to lead drills that help players learn and practice the fundamentals of the volleyball. This league is intended to be informal, therefore no official “teams” will be established by the league. Players will be divided into groups and assigned to courts by the coaches on-hand each week. Expect that all players will get to play with all players in their age division. Players will be assigned to courts for small-sided games.  There will be no official referees. Coaches and players will regulate their own play.

WHAT TO BRING, WEAR:  Players should come dressed to play volleyball for the weather of the day. Players may play in bare feet, tennis shoes or cleatless shoes. CLEATS ARE STRICTLY PROHIBITED!!!  Bring water and a good attitude.  A ball is not required, however if a player has favorite ball, they are welcome to bring along.  Parents, bring a lounge chair, a beverage, and enjoy the evening.

COVID SAFETY PLAN:  To ensure physical distancing, parents are asked to remain behind the fence line.  You will be approximately 20-ft from the courts and should be able to see very well.  Please bring your own chair, as there are no bleachers, and stay a safe distance from other families.  Masks are strongly encouraged.

Frequent Questions

Q:  Can my child play High School Volleyball and Rec at the same time?
A:  In the Fall, No. Their seasons overlap and it is against City policy. In the Spring, Yes, as there is no City volleyball league in the Spring.

Q:  When will I be notified about what team my child is on and when practices will be held?
A:  The sooner you sign up, the better. All families should be notified within 2 weeks of when practices will begin.

Q:  When will practices start?
A:  Practices begin the first week of school in the Fall, and April in the Spring.

Q:  How are players assigned to teams?
A:  If you child has played before, be sure to write the coaches/team name down when registering. We will do our best to have your child on the same team as before unless they are moving up into another age range. Please note if your child wants to play up into an older division. If new, they are placed into a blind draft.

Q:  When will games begin?
A:  Games usually begin 2/3 weeks after practices begin. The Spring season varies, but the Fall games usually run from the middle of September until mid-November.

Q:  Can my child play on the same team with a friend?
A:  We do our best to make this happen, but there are no guarantees.

Q:  I would like to coach.  How do I get a team?
A:  Please email [email protected] explaining what age range you would like to coach. We are always looking for new coaches and assistant coaches. We appreciate any help you can offer. No experience is necessary, training will be provided.

Q:  What league will my child play in?
A:  Unless you state otherwise at registration (children can play up in divisions, but not down), your child will be placed in the appropriate age range. We have recently begun co-ed in all divisions as well. If we don't have enough boys to fill a boys team, we can make a coed team in that division. Please make a note in your registration whether your child wants to play co-ed or not, that way they will be placed accordingly. Boys 7-9 and 15+ have to play coed. See the table below:

Q:  When/where are the games?
A: Every season the game places and play dates change. In the Spring we normally play at Brooking Elementary, Landstown & Lynnhaven Middle School. In the Fall, the City schedules at various middle schools.
